What the Data Means for Your Pet

Understanding the 4 most important columns before you choose a plan.

📋

Annual Limit

This is the maximum the insurer will pay out in a single policy year. Unlimited is best for catastrophic conditions like cancer or emergency surgery. A $5,000 annual limit can be exhausted by a single orthopedic surgery in large breeds.

🧬

Hereditary Conditions

Breed-specific conditions like hip dysplasia (Labs, German Shepherds), heart disease (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels), and brachycephalic syndrome (Bulldogs, Pugs) are hereditary. Most providers cover them if you enroll before symptoms appear.

🦷

Dental Illness Coverage

Dental disease affects over 80% of pets by age 3. Dental illness coverage includes periodontal disease, tooth extractions, and root canals. Healthy Paws is the only top-10 provider that does not include dental illness coverage.

💊

Reimbursement %

After your deductible, the insurer reimburses this percentage of covered costs. 90% reimbursement means you pay 10% out-of-pocket after the deductible. Figo is the only provider offering 100% reimbursement (at higher monthly premiums).

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pet insurance coverage limits and exclusions.

Which pet insurance covers hereditary conditions? +
All 10 providers in our table cover hereditary conditions to some degree, with one critical caveat: the condition must not be pre-existing at the time of enrollment. This means you should enroll your pet young — before any symptoms appear. For breeds with known hereditary risks (Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Cavaliers), enrolling within the first year of life is strongly recommended.
What does "dental illness" coverage actually include? +
Dental illness coverage typically includes periodontal disease treatment, tooth extractions due to disease (not trauma), and root canals. It does NOT include routine cleanings or preventive dental care — those fall under a wellness add-on. All providers cover dental accidents (broken teeth from trauma) regardless of their dental illness stance. Healthy Paws is the only major provider that excludes dental illness entirely.
Is unlimited annual coverage actually worth it? +
For most pets most years, a $5,000–$10,000 annual limit is sufficient. However, for large breeds prone to orthopedic issues, or any pet diagnosed with cancer, costs can easily exceed $15,000–$20,000 in a single year. If you have a high-risk breed (Labs, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs) or want complete peace of mind, unlimited annual coverage from Healthy Paws or Trupanion is worth the higher premium.
What is a "per-incident" deductible vs. an annual deductible? +
An annual deductible applies once per policy year across all claims. After you meet it, all further covered claims are reimbursed at the agreed percentage. Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible — you pay a deductible for each new condition, but once paid for that condition, it's waived for life. Most other providers use annual deductibles, which is simpler and often better for pets with multiple conditions in a year.
Can I insure a senior pet? +
Most providers have maximum enrollment ages (typically 10–14 years). Once enrolled, most plans continue for life as long as premiums are paid. However, senior pets enrolled for the first time will have any existing conditions treated as pre-existing and excluded. The younger you enroll, the more coverage you get. Check each provider's enrollment age limits before applying, as they vary significantly.
How are these providers ranked on this site? +
They are not ranked by quality — they are listed by estimated monthly cost (lowest to highest). This is purely a data reference tool. We do not receive compensation from any provider listed, and rankings are not based on affiliate relationships. Always get quotes from multiple providers before choosing, as pricing varies significantly by pet breed, age, location, and selected coverage levels.
